Gundam 00 Season 2: Unintentional Comedy
Gundam 00 is a series that takes its shit way too seriously. The plot is bullshit, the script laughable, and the characters are 1 dimensional and unrelatable. Yet because the series takes itself so seriously, I tune in for my weekly dose of lulz.
For those who haven’t watched either series, the plot boils down to this. In a future dominated by solar power, space elevators, and a mobile suits arms race, Gundams powered by perpetual motion machines come out of fucking nowhere and declare war on the world for the sake of ending war. Plot twists ensue, and the first season ends on a mysterious note by finally showing the titular 00 Gundam.
If this plot sounds familiar to you, it’s not your imagination. This series is basically Gundam Wing all over again. The one main difference is that instead of leaving homoerotic fantasies up to the fangirls’ imaginations, they have one character who is one step away from declaring he prefers the company of men, Tieria. Case in point: this screenshot from the OP of season 2
This is the expression he makes after seeing his fellow pilot fly off to certain death. Plus, look at the amount of purple he’s wearing. No manly man wears that much purple. He later goes on the crossdress in order to infiltrate a party, resulting in a convincing and hilarious trap.
But I digress, this show is actually quite entertaining. However, it’s funny for all the wrong reasons. For example, take the character of Louise Halevy. Part way through the first season, she loses all of her family and her hand after getting attacked by the Throne Gundams (a group of other Gundam pilots who also appear out of fucking nowhere, one of them is voiced by Kugimiya Rie, so they’re automatically awesome).
For some strange reason, a friend of mine and I found this scene to be absolutely hilarious, and nicknamed her Stumpy. There’s no reason why we should be laughing at her misery. Losing limbs isn’t funny, and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. However, the manner in which its presented is so unconvincing that any sort of sympathy you’re supposed to feel for her is lost. Now in season 2, Stumpy is a mobile suit pilot who throws a shit fit every time she sees a Gunam, resulting in more lulzy behavior.
Now Gundam 00 isn’t all bad. Take Mr. Bushido for instance. He’s a one man army. He doesn’t take shit from anyone. Mr. Bushido only fights who he wants to fight, and nobody can do anything about it except admire his awesomeness. If Mr. Bushido came to your house and kicked your dog, you couldn’t give him crap about it. He’s a mother fucking one man army.
On the whole, Gundam 00 is an entertaining show. Nothing more, nothing less. If you enjoyed Code Geass for how absurd it got, you will probably like Gundam 00 for the same reasons. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it will keep you entertained. The production quality is solid, with all the characters well drawn, and the action sequences well choreographed. I also enjoy most of the mech designs, as they have yet to reach Wing Zero Custom levels of absurdity. The cast is well selected, with each voice well matched to their character, although this is frankly not difficult to do considering how boring most of the characters are. The music is nothing special, although the OPs aren’t bad.
Gundam 00 isn’t a bad series. It’s not a great show by any means, but for people like me who grew up on Gundam, I have no complaints about it as its really just more of the same. Try giving the first season a shot and form your own opinions. In the meantime, I am eagerly awaiting to see what sort of crazy shit Mr. Bushido and Stumpy will do next.
