The Announcement of the Announcement of News of Haruhi Suzumiya

No, the title is not a typo. So in a post today on Sankaku Complex, there was a scan from the February issue of Newtype saying that the next month’s issue will have “big news” on the second season of Haruhi. This is the biggest load of crap I’ve heard in the longest time. Is this the only news we’ve heard about this series since fucking July? And what was that news? A picture of Haruhi with a ponytail. That’s it.

When an annoucement of an annoucement is the biggest news we hear about a series in months, there is something terribly wrong. I’m pissed off at Kyoto Animation for their bullshit. Teaser images and staff annoucements aren’t nearly as valuable as a concrete release date. A general estimate would be more valuable. Kyoto Animation is probably under a lot of preasure to make this series live up to the probably overinflated fan expectations. In all honesty, they’re probably just trying to come up with a dance as infectuous as the Hare Hare Yukai.

My personal belief with advertising is to make it an all or nothing kind of deal. Either release it out of the blue and watch it become a hit due to no expectations and constant surprises, or saturate the market with so many teaser clips and images that the fans will know everything about the series going in, and the familiarity will be as comforting as reruns of The Simpsons. To give a simple analogy, you don’t throw a couple of peanuts at a caged bear. You either leave it alone or give it the entire bag, otherwise you’re going to get your face torn off.

Most of all, I’m pissed off at myself for buying into all the hype. I eagerly watched that entire pointless live action teaser clip, hoping for at least a teaser image at the end. I nerded out every time a teaser image was shown. Every time a friend asked me when the second season was coming out, I defended Kyoto Animation and lied that I heard it was coming after their current show finished. I will no longer buy into this hype. Maybe.
